The Story:
A leader of the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1943) and his designers used his trademark favrile glass to express nature-inspired themes in extraordinary lamps and windows.
Tiffany Studio designers were avid students of nature and often used cuttings that Louis C. Tiffany supplied from his gardens for their reference. An archival photograph of the studio reveals long stemmed daffodils arranged on a paper lamp template as a first step in the design process.
Our vase is adapted from one of Tiffany’s Daffodil shades in the collection of the New-York Historical Society. Probably designed by Clara Driscoll, Tiffany’s innovative manager of the Woman’s Glass Cutting Department (the Tiffany Girls), the piece features a profusion of entwined daffodils dancing around a vibrant hanging lamp shade.
